Tati’s Hymns (Abhang): Free Rumination

Abstract

Tati means the door of small hut made by stem of sorghum plant. Ear and leaves from the stem of dried sorghum grain removed from the stem after complete ripening. The sorghum stem turns very hard unaffected by the hot-weather, harsh blow of air and extreme rain; it becomes unbreakable like bamboo stick, called as Dhat in Karnataka. Tat-Dhat personifies very healthy, straight-forward, brave, immovable, staunch personality. Word Dhat changes it’s accent 700 years back, change of the word from Tat into Dhat occurs according to stressed accent of Kannada Language. These words are used by the people from the borders of Karnataka; they may have pronounced it stressing the consonant ‘T’ in Tat which eventually changed into Dhat as more stressed one. So Muktai expressed appropriately about the wall of the hut and the door made up with (Kud) sticks of dried sorghum plant. Tati is a door of small hut and not the door of palace. Technology made possible to open any tightly locked door of any palace, today. But, no technology can open the door of any heart without person’s own permission. Here the shut door of hut denotes Dnyaneshwar’s heart, Muktabai tried to appease it and was unquestionably hard to subdue. In fact, she used strongest technique of the words to open Dnyaneshwar’s door closed in fury. Saint Muktabai made the door open very easily by using her words with pure emotions to appeal for the sake of the deepest care for her elder brother, Saint Dnyaneshwar. As a sister she convinced, requested, and honored his higher position. Convinced her brother to have salvation, to be freed from the shackles of the life. Only a sister can do this exhausting, tangled and gracious attempt for her brother. The creation in Tati hymns (Abhang) reveals the contemporaneous and serious happenings Dnyaneshwar faced in his life.
