Value Education as Reflected in Ramayana

Abstract

The Valmiki Ramayana consists of seven parts called Khandas. Historically the date of the epic is a matter of considerable controversy and nearly impossible to fix with certainty. Extensive scholarly work on the linguistic, stylistic, sociological, geographical and political data narrows down the possible dates of the epic as we have it now to the period between 750 B.C. and 500 B.C. Ramayana is a veritable treasure of moral principles and ethical precepts. The life of Lord Rama is a shining example of idealism and ethical behavior in all facets of human relationship -as a king; husband, brother, son and friend. Ramayana is thus one of the very important pieces of literature providing ethical and moral guidelines. The researcher concludes here that each child gradually assimilates what is taught in the classroom, along with what he or she sees and experiences to create their own individual set of values. These values will determine the children’s attitudes and actions for the rest of their life. To sum up, value education is varied from the point of view of value orientation of students. Schools are equipped both in terms of content, method and evaluation of values. Activities in morning assembly, stories inspiring instances and question answer methods are useful in imparting moral education at elementary stage. This study is also supported language learning integrated with art education like drawing, painting, music, dance, drama, facilitates learning of linguistic skills as well as inculcate values through joyful learning activities.
