Vedic Education System in India

Abstract

The Vedic education system is considered the oldest education system. The teacher-student relationship was highly amicable, resembling a father-and-son bond during the Vedic era. The educational history of India can be categorized into various epochs, each characterized by its distinct educational framework. These epochs align with ancient, medieval, and modern India, including the post-independence era. Ancient Indian education originated from the Vedas, which serve as the foundation of Indian philosophy and knowledge. The term "Veda" translates to "knowledge." During this period, education was divided into worldly and otherworldly. Worldly education focused on social aspects, while otherworldly education centered around intellectual pursuits for attaining salvation. The primary objective of Vedic education was to foster the physical, moral, and intellectual development of individuals, with great emphasis placed on attention, concentration, and yoga. Education was provided free of charge, and students led exemplary lives within the Vedic education system.
